Cubs; Cards Win, Sox Lose On Opening Weekend

>>Samardzija, Cubs Clip Nats

(Chicago, IL)  --  Alfonso Soriano plated two runs and Jeff Samardzija was one out away from a complete game as the Cubs clipped the Nationals, 4-3.  Samardzija gave up just one earned run to go along with eight strikeouts to register the win.  Carlos Marmol was credited with the save for Chicago, which salvaged the finale of a season-opening three-game set at Wrigley Field.  Adam LaRoche clubbed a two-run homer for Washington in a losing effort.  Jordan Zimmermann was saddled with the tough-luck loss after allowing two runs, one earned, through six innings of duty.

>>Cards Crush Crew

(Milwaukee, WI)  --  Carlos Beltran went 3-for-5 with a two-run home run as the Cardinals crushed the Brewers, 9-3.  Matt Holliday and Rafael Furcal each scored twice and knocked in a run for St. Louis, which won the rubber match of a three-game set.  Lance Lynn was strong in his first start in place of the injured Chris Carpenter, tossing six-and-two-third innings of one-run ball, striking out eight and issuing one walk with two hits.  St. Louis begins a three game series tonight in Cincinnati with Jake Westbrook on the mound facing Homer Bailey.

>>Rangers Blank White Sox

(Arlington, TX)  --  Matt Harrison fired six innings of four-hit, shutout ball to lead the Rangers to a 5-0 win over the White Sox in the rubber match of a three-game set.  Harrison struck out three and walked two en route to the win.  Adrian Beltre belted a two-run homer, while David Murphy and Josh Hamilton added solo shots in the victory.  Gavin Floyd allowed five runs, four of which were earned, over five-and-two-thirds innings to take the loss.  Chicago left nine men on base in the loss.
