A new study confirms what many men have always wanted to believe. Beer makes men smarter, sort of. Researchers at the University of Illinois found that men who drank a couple of beers were better at solving brain teasers than men who were sober. The 40 men in the study were given three words and told to name a fourth to complete a pattern. For example, "cheese" would complete a pattern with the words "blue," "cottage," and "Swiss." The 20 men who drank two pints of beer before taking the test solved 40-percent more of the problems three-and-a-half seconds faster than the 20 who were sober. However, the beer-drinkers who were better at creative problem-solving were worse at working memory tasks. A report on the study is available on the Federation of Associations in Behavioral and Brain Sciences website.
