Illinois Mulling State Park Fees

Lawmakers in Springfield are mulling a proposal to charge admission fees to the state's several hundred recreational properties.

Illinois is among only seven states that don't charge state-park admissions. Supporters say the money would help close a $750 million backlog in park maintenance and repairs from years of shrinking budgets.

The measure would allow state officials to charge visitors an annual or daily fee to enter state parks. Annual admission fees would be no more than $25 and daily passes around $5 to $8.

The House approved the measure by 81-29 in March. It's moving through the Senate now.

Marc Miller is the director of the state Department of Natural Resources. He says finding sustainable revenue sources is important for the health and safety of the parks and visitors.
