Cubs Walk Off On Cards; Peavy Shuts Out A's; Humber Player of Week

(Chicago, IL)  --  Joe Mather went 2-for-3 and hit the game-winning, two-run single in the ninth to send the Cubs to a 3-2 win over the Cardinals.  Alfonso Soriano had a sacrifice fly while Rafael Dolis picked up the win out of the bullpen.  Matt Garza went seven innings and allowed two runs in the start for Chicago, which has won two-of-three following a six-game slide.  Jason Motte suffered his first loss and first blown save, allowing both runs in the ninth while recording two outs.  Carlos Beltran and Yadier Molina each drove in a run for St. Louis, which has lost three-of-five.  Jaime Garcia earned a no-decision after allowing one run over seven-and-two-thirds innings of work.

(Oakland, CA)  --  Jake Peavy tossed a complete-game three-hitter as the White Sox blanked the Athletics, 4-0.  Peavy struck out five to improve to 3-and-0 on the season.  Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko clubbed back-to-back homers in the fourth inning, while Gordon Beckham and A.J. Pierzynski each drove in a run in the ninth for insurance.  Alex Rios went 3-for-5 for Chicago, which has won four straight after dropping four-of-five.  Bartolo Colon gave up two runs over seven innings to suffer the tough-luck loss.  Yoenis Cespedes managed a double off Peavy for Oakland, which has dropped three-of-four.

>>Humber Named AL Player Of The Week

(New York, NY)  --  Chicago White Sox pitcher Philip Humber has been named the American League Player of the Week.  Humber tossed the 21st perfect game in MLB history on Saturday, striking out nine while needing just 96 pitches to accomplish the feat.  It was the first complete game and shutout of his career.  It was the 18th no-hitter recorded by the White Sox, but just the third perfect game.  Humber joins Mark Buehrle and Charlie Robertson as White Sox pitchers who have thrown perfect games.  In his other start during last week, Humber received a no decision while allowing one run on six hits with three walks through five-and-a-third frames.
