Amended Parking Ordinance Proposed For Downtown Clinton

A recent ordinance to remove all parking enforcement on the downtown Clinton square failed, and Clinton city officials continued to work towards an agreeable ordinance.

The past several months, downtown parking concerns have been brought to the Clinton City Council, and after one failed proposed ordinance, City officials believe that have found something everyone may be able to agree on. Clinton Mayor Carolyn Peters explains the changes start on the square. The outside part of the square will have a 2-hour limit.

According to Mayor Peters, the inside of the square will become a 4-hour limit. She feels that will be a good change for those that will be spending a significant amount of time downtown.

There will be some things remaining the same. 15-minute spaces will remain in some parts of the square, and there will be some that will be covered up. Mayor Peters also notes there will be a few changes to overnight parking on the square.

Parking meter heads will be changed around the square. Some areas outside the square will become 9-hour parking meters and some will be changed to two hour limits.

The ordinance, if approved, will go into effect May 20 and will expire on August 1 of 2012, unless it is continued. The City will revisit the issue prior to continuing the ordinance.
