Clinton PD Hosting 'Take Back Initiative' Saturday Morning

Before you head out for your Saturday morning activities, the Clinton Police Department is asking residents to find any unused prescription medications or other drugs in their homes to bring by the department Saturday morning.

The Clinton Police Department is hosting their annual "Take Back Initiative" Saturday. It gives anyone with unused prescription medications or any other household drugs not in use to dispose of it in a safe way. Clinton Police Chief Mike Reidy explains the implementation of this program several years ago was because the department would see one or two deaths a year from young people overdosing on leftover prescription medications or unused drugs in a medicine cabinet.

The "Take Back Initiative", which is sponsored by the Clinton Police department in conjunction with the Drug Enforcement Administartion, will hold a collection Saturday at Clinton City Hall. Chief Reidy explains this year, officers will be out on the curbs collecting the drugs. He adds this program is open for any resident in any location.

The program is not just a one day event. Chief Reidy explains the Police Department has a container that anyone can come in and drop off any unwanted drugs, not just April 28th. He says it is better to have unused drugs in the hands of the proper authorities rather than having them in cabinets exposed to the wrong hands.

Chief Reidy believes this is the safest option available for disposing of unwanted drugs. He says any other methods of disposal can lead to harmful chemicals that are not generally treated for, back into the eco-system. He feels handing them over to the DEA ensures the drugs are disposed of properly.
