Rep. Sommer Discusses Important Session Issues

Many of the long-timers in Springfield continue to say that this is probably the most important legislative session in decades. With the state being in dire straits when it comes to its financial condition, over the next few weeks Illinois government leaders must come up with ways of passing a budget, along with cutting pension and healthcare costs…and it all must be done by the end of May.

State Representative Keith Sommer (R-Morton) said that two of the largest issues to deal with are pension reform and Medicaid.

As far as the pensions are concerned, Sommer said Governor Quinn last week outlined his pension reform proposal but  unfortunately, we still haven’t seen details and there are many questions that remain unanswered.  When it comes to the $1 a pack tax increase on cigarettes to support Medicaid is concerned, Sommer said he opposes passing any more tax increases to avoid having to reduce our spending.
