Students First Day Of School Could Be Full Day

The Illinois House of Representatives Thursday approved legislation that will prevent schools from bringing students to school for an hour on the 1st and last day of the school year and having them count as full days.

Under current Illinois law, schools on first and last days of the year tend to ignore the standard rule that students must have at least five hours of class time to call it a school day, for purposes of state aid to the schools.

According to the measure’s sponsor, State Representative Dave Winters of Shirland, the bill requires students to be in class for at least 5 hours on the 1st and last day of the school year if those days are to be counted as full days.

Rep. Winters says that parents have been frustrated for years with the old tradition of bussing kids to school and then almost immediately returning them home.
