Panel To Give Advice On Closing Facilities

A legislative commission is scheduled to give its opinion on Gov. Pat Quinn's plans to close several state facilities, including the Tamms maximum security prison.

The commission's vote is advisory only. The Democratic governor can close the prisons, mental institutions and offices even if lawmakers think it's a bad idea.

The Commission on Government Forecasting and Accountability is scheduled to convene Tuesday morning.

The agenda includes votes on closing Tamms and a women's prison in Dwight, as well as a developmental center in Centralia.

Quinn says closing the prisons would save money, while closing the Centralia center would lead to improved care for people with developmental disabilities.
