LIHEAP Funds Still Available Thanks To Mild Winter

For those seeking to take advantage of Community Action's Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, there are still plenty of funds still available thanks to a very mild winter.

LIHEAP is an assistance program to anyone who may be having trouble paying their energy bill. Kim Lucas is the LIHEAP Assistant Coordinator for Community Action, she explains there is sometimes a misconception among those who come in seeking assistance paying their energy bill. She says they simply look at your previous 30 days income and give you assistance as needed from there.

Another misconception Lucas believes there is in relation to assistance is a family is only eligible once per year. Lucas says the fund can be taken advantage of beyond the one-time use. She says it is also available in cases of disconnection and folks need help reconnecting their service.

Lucas encourages anyone needing assistance to come in and apply, even if you are new to needing help. She says there is no shame in seeking help, especially in energy assistance, as it is something everyone needs.

Lucas notes LIHEAP is for more than gas and electric utilities. She says propane, fuel oil, and wood are other sources of heat they can assist with.
