Sox, Cards Win; Cubs Washed Out; LaRussa To Have Number Retired

(Chicago, IL)  --  A.J. Pierzynski and Gordon Beckham each clubbed solo homers as the White Sox trounced the Indians, 7-2.  Beckham added an RBI single as a part of his 3-for-4 night as Chicago won its second straight following a five-game slide.  Chris Sale allowed one run over six innings to improve to 3-and-1.  Shelley Duncan hit a solo homer and Jason Kipnis doubled in a run for Cleveland, which has lost four of its last six.  Ubaldo Jimenez gave up seven runs, four earned, over four-and-two-thirds innings to suffer the loss for the Tribe.

>>Cardinals Outslug Pirates

(St. Louis, MO)  --  David Freese belted a three-run homer as the Cardinals outslugged the Pirates, 10-7.  Rafael Furcal smacked a two-run shot, while Matt Holliday added a solo shot.  Adam Wainwright lasted seven innings to earn his first win.  Jason Motte notched his fourth save.  St. Louis has won four-of-five.  Jose Tabata and Pedro Alvarez each clubbed two-run homers for Pittsburgh.  Charlie Morton allowed five earned runs in only four-and-a-third innings to fall to 1-and-2.

>>Cubs Opener With Reds Postponed

(Cincinnati, OH)  --  Tuesday night's game between the Chicago Cubs and the Cincinnati Reds was postponed due to rain.  A makeup date has not yet been announced.  The series will instead start tonight at the Great American Ball Park.  Jeff Samardzija will toe the rubber against Bronson Arroyo.

>>Cardinals To Retire La Russa's Number

(St. Louis, MO)  --  The St. Louis Cardinals will retire the number-10 of former manager Tony La Russa.  The uniform number will be retired prior to a Friday, May 11th game against the Atlanta Braves.  La Russa racked up a franchise-record 1,408 wins while with the Redbirds.  The 67-year-old retired after guiding the Cards to their 11th World Series title last fall.  He led the Cardinals to eight division titles, three National League pennants and two World Series championships.  La Russa is the third-winningest manager in MLB history.

>>Damon Joins Indians In Chicago

(Chicago, IL)  --  Johnny Damon is back in the big leagues.  The Cleveland Indians added the veteran outfielder to the roster before last night's game against the White Sox in Chicago.  The 38-year-old signed a minor league contract with the Tribe last month.  Damon did not play last night against the White Sox with lefty Chris Sale on the hill for Chicago.  The Indians lost the game, 7-2.  To make room on the roster, the Indians designated infielder Jose Lopez for assignment.
