Social Security Moves Closer To Paperless Payments

Last year Social Security began phasing out issuing paper checks to recipients and began going towards electronic payments.

While the process did not happen all at once, time is starting to run short for those who may still be receiving paper checks to switch to an electronic form of payment. Jack Meyers, Public Affairs Specialist with Social Security explains the process began last year, as new Social Security recipients were automatically enrolled into the electronic payment process.

As of March 1 of 2013, current Social Security recipients will have to make the switch. Meyers recommends making the switch sooner rather than waiting until the last minute. He feels there are many benefits to receiving the payments electronically.

For anyone that may have financial difficulties and cannot open a bank account for direct deposit, Meyers says the debit card they issue is a good alternative. He says it can be used anywhere Master Card is accepted.
