Cubs, Cards Win; Sox Swept In Double-Header

(Chicago, IL)  --  Bryan LaHair and Ian Stewart smacked back-to-back solo homers in the fourth frame to back seven stellar innings from Jeff Samardzija as the Cubs cruised to a 5-1 win over the Braves.  Samardzija struck out seven and allowed just one run on five hits to improve to 4-and-1 on the season.  Geovany Soto added a two-run shot and Starlin Castro also knocked in a run for Chicago, which has won three of its last four games.  Jason Heyward's solo dinger in the second inning accounted for Atlanta's lone run of the game.  Tommy Hanson gave up a pair of runs through five frames to absorb the loss.  The Braves had won their last three games.

(Phoenix, AZ)  --  Carlos Beltran and Matt Holiday cracked back-to-back home runs in the third inning to lead the Cardinals to a 9-6 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks.  Allen Craig and David Freese also hit back-to-back shots in the seventh inning to thwart Arizona's' comeback attempt.  A 7-0 Cards lead had been trimmed to 7-6.  St. Louis won its second straight game as Lance Lynn picked up his major league-leading sixth win.  Jason Motte locked up his sixth save.  Joe Saunders streak of five straight quality starts came to an end when he gave up seven runs and nine hits in three-and-a-third innings.  Cody Ransom knocked his fourth home run of the season, which ties a career-high, in the loss.

>>Indians Sweep Doubleheader With ChiSox

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Michael Brantley and Casey Kotchman drove in three runs each to lead the Indians to an 8-6 win over the White Sox in the first game of a day-night doubleheader.  Brantley and Kotchman each had a two-run double in a five-run third inning that staked Cleveland to an 8-2 lead.  Zach McAllister allowed four runs, but just two earned, in six innings for his first big league win.  Nick Hagadone got the final three outs for his first career save.  Phillip Humber [[ UMM-ber ]] was rocked for all eight runs in less than three frames to take the loss.  Alexei Ramirez had three RBI for Chicago.

Shelley Duncan's RBI double in the bottom of the eighth frame proved to be the difference as the Indians edged the White Sox, 3-2, in the nightcap of a doubleheader.  Michael Brantley and Jason Kipnis each knocked in a run for Cleveland, which has won three games in-a-row.  Joe Smith tossed just two-thirds of an inning to register the win and Tony Sipp closed it out to nail down his first save.  Brent Morel and Alex Rios each plated a run for Chicago.  Matt Thornton was charged with the loss for the White Sox, who have dropped six of their last seven games.  In the opener, Brantley and Casey Kotchman drove in three runs each to lead the Indians to an 8-6 win over the White Sox.
