Inmate Partners Must Be Notified Of STD?s

Sexually transmitted diseases often run rampant among jail and prison inmate populations, and now lawmakers are looking for ways to notify people who may have had contact with the inmates.  They’ve passed a bill that requires the Illinois Departments of Public Health and Corrections to work up a plan to notify past inmate partners.  The identity of the inmate will not be revealed when notifying the partners but they must be told about the possibility of infection.  The idea is to help stop the spread of the STD’s and give those who may be infected a chance to get tested and treated.  One lawmaker says inmates still have a right to privacy but notes personal privacy should not trump public safety.  The bill is headed to Governor Quinn’s desk for final approval.
