LIGHTNING SAFETY WEEK BEGINS SUNDAY WITH A REMINDER THAT “WHEN THUNDER ROARS, GO INDOORS”

ILLINOIS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SPOKESPERSON PATTI THOMPSON SAYS EVEN WHEN IT SEEMS A STORM IS FAR AWAY…THE DANGER OF BEING STRUCK BY LIGHTNING IS STILL THERE.

ACCORDING TO THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE…ABOUT 55 PEOPLE DIE AND OVER ONE THOUSAND ARE INJURED BY LIGHTNING STRIKES EACH YEAR IN THE US.

LIGHTNING CAN STRIKE AS FAR AS 10 MILES AWAY FROM THE STORM…SO WHEN YOU START HEARING THUNDER…YOU NEED TO GET INSIDE SAYS ILLINOIS EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT SPOKESPERSON PATTI THOMPSON. BUT IF YOU’RE OUTSIDE AND CAN’T FIND SHELTER?

AND WHILE LESS THAN 10 PERCENT OF PEOPLE WHO ARE STRUCK BY LIGHTING ARE KILLED…MANY ARE SERIOUSLY INJURED AND SUFFER FROM LONG TERM EFFECTS LIKE CHRONIC PAIN…NERVE DAMAGE AND DIZZINESS.
