Members of Congress from Illinois are praising passage of legislation to extend federal funding for highways and transit programs.

It's a key issue for Illinois as 1 of the nation's important transportation crossroads.

The legislation will provide $4.1 billion for highways in Illinois over the next three years. It also sets aside $1.5 billion for mass transit in the state, representing an 11% increase.

U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin says it will ensure "states, cities and local transit agencies will have the confidence to plan and build big projects."

The Democrat said Friday it would provide money for projects like the I-74 bridge in the Quad Cities and the relocation of rail lines through Springfield.

Congressman Dan Lipinski says it will create jobs, relieve congestion and promote long-term economic growth.
