Champaign County Murder Trial Ends In Hung Jury

The trial of a central Illinois man charged with a fatal shooting in Rantoul has ended in a hung jury - again.

A jury deliberated for about nine hours Thursday before telling Judge John Kennedy that they couldn't reach a unanimous verdict in the case of 28-year-old Steven Monroe. Monroe is charged with murder in the January 2011 shooting of 21-year-old Marcus Brown.

It was the third trial for Monroe. 1 of his earlier trials also ended in a mistrial because the jury couldn't reach a verdict. In the other case, the judge dismissed the jury after some jurors expressed unhappiness that their names had been read aloud in court during jury selection.

Prosecutors say they'll decide later if they'll retry Monroe.
