Illinois Drought Good For Peach Crop

Dry conditions in Illinois have meant headaches for many Illinois farmers, but not those growing peaches.

Union County peach farmer Wayne Sirles of Rendleman Orchards says the lack of rain brings out the natural sweetness of peaches. Sirles say the peaches seem to be "extra sweet and even tastier than usual."

Sirles says the rain hasn't diluted the fruit's natural sugars. Rendleman Orchards is on Illinois 127 in Alto Pass, about 15 miles south of Carbondale.

The U.S. Drought Monitor has most of Illinois in drought conditions, with far southern Illinois rated in an extreme drought.
