Illinois Man Jumps In River To Cool Off And Drowns

Authorities are investigating the apparent drowning of a 52-year-old Aurora man Friday in the Fox River.

The Aurora Police Department reported the death Saturday. Police say the victim, Gene Autry Pryor, had been drinking with three adult friends near Veterans Memorial Island when he jumped into the river to cool off.

The man's friends lost sight of him after a few minutes and then spotted him floating face down. They pulled him to shore where paramedics found him when they arrived.

Pryor was taken to Provena Mercy Medical Center in Aurora where he was pronounced dead Friday evening.

Police say the death does not appear suspicious. The Kane County coroner's office has set an autopsy for Monday.
