Mike Trout went 1-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base for the American League.  AL starter Justin Verlander allowed all five runs on four hits and two walks in the first frame to suffer the loss.  The American League had only six hits.  The AL was shutout in the Midsummer Classic for the first time since 1996.  It marked only the eighth all-time shutout in All-Star Game history.

Carlos Beltran went 0-for-1 with a walk and a run scored.  Rafael Furcal was 1-for-3 with a run and David Freese struck out in his only at-bat.  Pitcher Lance Lynn did not appear in the contest. The Cards open up the second half of the season on Friday evening with the opener of a three-game series at Cincinnati.

Cubs shortstop Starlin Castro and first baseman Bryan LaHair both went 0-for-1 off the bench.  Four Southsiders made the team, but just two played.  Pitcher Chris Sale gave up two hits and struck out one in a scoreless inning.  Paul Konerko did not have an at-bat but took over at first base for Prince Fielder for a few innings.  Adam Dunn and Jake Peavy did not make an appearance.

The Northsiders and Southsiders both start the second half of the season on Friday.  The Cubs open up a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday afternoon at Wrigley Field.  The ChiSox stay in KC to kick off the second half of the season on Friday evening with the opener of a three-game set against the Royals.
