Southern Illinois Farmers Fear For Corn, Soybean Crops

Southern Illinois grain farmers say unless substantial rains fall soon and temperatures moderate, they will suffer a crop disaster.

Madison County farmers say while the corn crop could be wiped out by current conditions, the soybean crop is faring better. However, soybean yield will drop without relief from parched conditions.

Madison County farmers are suffering under what agronomists call "moderate" drought conditions. There has been no measurable rain in the county so far this month.

The National Agricultural Statistics office reported last week that 78% of the corn in Madison County has tasseled. However, Tom Gett of the Illinois Farm Bureau says corn doesn't pollinate when it's as hot as it is. Also, pollinated corn will need rain soon to fill out growing kernels.
