Cubs, Sox Win; Cards Stumped

>>Samardzija, Cubs Shut Out Pirates

(Pittsburgh, PA)  --  Jeff Samardzija tossed eight innings of one-hit ball to lead the Cubs in a 2-0 win over the Pirates.  Samardzija struck out five and allowed just one walk to improve to 7-and-8 on the season.  Carlos Marmol closed it out in the ninth to nail down his 12th save.  Alfonso Soriano had a pair of RBI doubles for Chicago, which snapped a three-game slide.  Erik Bedard fanned 11 through seven innings of two-hit, one-run ball to suffer the tough-luck loss for Pittsburgh.  The Bucs had won their last five games.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Luis Cruz connected on a three-run homer to lift the Dodgers to a 5-3 win over the Cardinals in St. Louis.  Mark Ellis added a two-run double for Los Angeles, which has won five straight.  Chad Billingsley returned from the disabled list to toss six innings of one-run ball for the win.  Kenley Jansen notched his 19th save.  Joe Kelly gave up two earned runs in six innings to suffer the loss for St. Louis.  Carlos Beltran hit a two-run jack and Lance Berkman added an RBI single for the Cards, who had won their previous three contests.

(Chicago, IL)  --  Paul Konerko went 3-for-4 and hit a three-run homer to power the White Sox to a 7-4 win over the Twins.  Alejandro De Aza went 3-for-4 with two runs scored while Adam Dunn and Alex Rios each clubbed two-run homers for Chicago.  Gavin Floyd surrendered three runs, two earned, over six frames to pick up the win.  Addison Reed notched his 16th save.  The Sox snapped a five-game slide.  Denard Span finished 3-for-5 with a run while Ryan Doumit jacked a solo homer for Minnesota.  Francisco Liriano allowed seven runs in just two-and-two-thirds innings for the loss as the Twins dropped their fourth game in six contests.
