Bloomington Council Approves New Water Ordinance

The Bloomington City Council has approved a new drought ordinance that sets voluntary and mandatory water use restrictions.

The measure approved Monday night also doubles the fines for people who violate the ordinance during an extreme drought. A first offense will now carry a $100 fine, while a second offense carries a $200 fine and all subsequent offenses will bring a $500 penalty.

The ordinance specifies what lake levels trigger increased water use restrictions.

Voluntary restrictions begin when the combined level of Evergreen Lake and Lake Bloomington is 8 feet below normal. Mandatory restrictions kick in when those lake levels are 10 feet below normal.

Water Director Craig Cummings says the lake levels on Monday were 5.8 feet below normal.
