Sox; Cards Win; Cubs Lose

(Washington, DC)  --  Adam LaRoche clubbed a solo home run to back seven scoreless innings from Ross Detwiler as the Nationals clipped the Cubs, 2-1.  Detwiler struck out three and allowed four hits with three walks to improve to 9-and-6 on the season.  Tyler Clippard gave up an RBI single to Wellington Castillo in the ninth, but held on to nail down his 30th save.  Ryan Zimmerman added an RBI double for Washington, which has won five of its last six games.  Jeff Samardzija fanned eight through seven innings of one-run ball to suffer the tough-luck loss for Chicago.  The Cubs have dropped three games in-a-row.

>>White Sox Double Up Twins

(Chicago, IL)  --  Gordon Beckham hit a two-run homer and finished with three RBI as the White Sox doubled up Minnesota 4-2.  Paul Konerko added an RBI single for Chicago, which regained control of the AL Central over Detroit by one game after the Tigers lost to Cleveland.  Hector Santiago allowed one run over five-plus innings for the win while Addison Reed picked up his 25th save.  Samuel Deduno suffered the loss for the Twins after allowing two runs across six innings.  Jamey Carroll hit a solo homer and Justin Morneau drove in a run for Minnesota, which has lost back-to-back contests.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Allen Craig's RBI single in the bottom of the seventh inning was the difference as the Cardinals held off the Mets, 5-4, yesterday at Busch Stadium.  Skip Schumaker smacked a solo homer and Matt Carpenter plated a pair for St. Louis, which has won two-of-three on the heels of a four-game slide.  The series continues tonight at 7:15 p.m.

>>Cards Recall Marte From Memphis

(St. Louis, MO)  --  The Cardinals recalled pitcher Victor Marte from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.  Marte played in 43 games with the Cards earlier this season and was 2-and-2 with a 4.46 ERA.  The 31-year-old was with the big league club until being optioned July 25th.

>>Nats' Strasburg Done After Two More Starts

(Washington, DC)  --  Washington Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg will be shut down following his next two starts.  Nationals manager Davey Johnson says Stephen Strasburg will make his final start of the season on September 12th.  Strasburg had Tommy John surgery last year and the Nationals say they only want him to pitch between 160 and 180 innings this season to protect his elbow.  He is up to 156-and-one-third innings this season.  The 24-year-old fireballer is 15-and-6 with 2.94 ERA and leads the National League in strikeouts for the first-place Nats.
