Hero Teacher Speaks Out

The Normal Community high school teacher who tackled the gunman during Friday's shooting said his first day back to school was "awesome."  Derrick Schonauer met briefly with the media this morning.  He didn't go into details about what happened, but he says he had a relaxing weekend and was glad to get back with his students this morning.

No one was injured in the shooting on Friday.  The 14-year old student pulled the handgun out of his backpack just as class was ending.  He also had a hatchet, kerosene, and painkillers.  Unit Five Superintendent Gary Niehaus is pleased with the way they handled the situation but he says he'd like to improve internal communications for emergencies.   And he would've liked to reunite students with their parents faster.
