Chicago Stirke Likely To Affect Other IL Schools

Parents across Illinois may want to take a close look at the Chicago teacher strike. It could affect their local schools for years to come.

Experts say management and labor everywhere will scrutinize the Chicago deal to see what can be adapted to local needs.

Decisions on how to include student performance in teacher evaluations will be of huge interest. So will seemingly mundane issues like reducing teachers' paperwork or protecting them from abusive principals.

Both sides will also look at the big picture. They'll see that Chicago teachers went on strike, largely kept parents on their side and managed to win some concessions.

Robert Bruno of the University of Illinois at Chicago says he thinks there are "a lot of nervous school boards around the state."
