The chimes that normally ring out over the quad at the University of Illinois are being silenced as part of International Week of the Deaf.

The chimes in Altgeld Hall's tower went silent Tuesday night and will remain that way until 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Matthew Dye is a professor of speech and hearing science. He says the university's Sue Wood works as what is known as a chimesmaster. Wood agreed to silence the chimes.

Dye says several dozen people also have signed a pledge to remain silent Wednesday.

The university's observance of International Week of the Deaf also will include 25 Illinois School for the Deaf students performing the National Anthem in sign language at Saturday's Penn State-Illinois football game.
