Investigation into the scene of an accident which occurred at approximately 1:45 p.m. on Wednesday, September 26, revealed that a vehicle driven by Ronald Spain, 22, Decatur, was traveling southbound and came to a stop behind a vehicle driven by Derek Hays, 27, Rantoul, at the stoplight on US Business 51 South at US Highway 51. Spain stated he thought he saw Hays moving forward. He looked down at his phone, and pressed on the accelerator, causing Spain to crash into the rear end of Hays, which was still stopped at the turn light. The crash caused significant damage to the front end of Spain’s vehicle. Hays sustained damage to the rear bumper, tail lights, and the registration plate light. No injuries were reported. Spain was issued a citation for Follow Too Closely. Spain posted his IL Driver’s License as bond and was released.

 

ALL SUSPECTS ARE PRESUMED INNOCENT UNTIL FOUND GUILTY IN A COURT OF LAW.
