Baseball Season Ends; Cards Advance To Post-Season; Cabrera Wins Triple Crown

>>Cubs Walk-Off On Astros In Season Finale

(Chicago, IL)  --  Bryan LaHair singled in Darwin Barney in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Cubs a season-ending 5-4 win over the Astros.  LaHair also had a solo home run in the second inning for Chicago, which won for just the second time in its last eleven games to finish the season 61-and-101.  Starlin Castro became the first Cubs infielder to play in all 162 games since Hall of Famer Ron Santo in 1968.  He is just the fourth shortstop to play in all 162 games in the last ten seasons.  Carlos Marmol worked a scoreless inning of relief to get credit for the win.  Justin Maxwell clubbed a three-run homer for Houston.  Hector Ambriz was saddled with the loss for the 'Stros, who move to the AL West next season.  They finished this year at 55-and-107.  The 107 losses are a franchise-record.

(St. Louis, MO)  --  Matt Carpenter's RBI single in the bottom of the eighth gave the Cardinals a 1-0 win over the Reds in the season finale for the playoff-bound teams.  Victor Marte was credited with the win.  Jason Motte earned his 42nd save.  The Cardinals will clash with the Braves in the NL Wild Card Game in Atlanta on Friday.

>>Floyd Leads ChiSox Over Cleveland

(Cleveland, OH)  --  Dan Johnson blasted three home runs and plated five to back seven scoreless innings from Gavin Floyd to lead the White Sox in a season-ending 9-0 win over the Indians.  Floyd struck out six and allowed just three hits to improve to 12-and-11.  Paul Konerko clubbed a two-run shot and Dayan Viciedo [[ vee-cee-AY-doh ]] added a solo shot for the Southsiders, who took two-of-three at Progressive Field to finish the season at 85-and-77.  Jason Kipnis recorded two of Cleveland's five total hits.  David Huff gave up seven runs, just three earned, through four-and-two-third frames to suffer the loss.  The Tribe ends its campaign at 68-and-94.

>>Cardinals To Play Braves In NL Wild Card Game Tomorrow

(Atlanta, GA)  --  With the regular season all finished, the Cardinals are now gearing up for the playoffs.  The Cards will take on the Braves in the National League Wild Card game Friday in Atlanta.  Kyle Lohse [[ Loash ]] will oppose Kris Medlen.  The winner moves on to the NL Division Series.

>>Alfonso Soriano Open To Trade

(Chicago, IL)  --  Cubs outfielder Alfonso Soriano says he is open to a trade.  Soriano wants to stay in the Windy City, but is willing to be moved if the team is still looking to rebuild after next season.  The 36-year-old just finished up his sixth season of an eight-year, $136-million deal he signed before the 2007 season.  The final year of his contract is in 2014.  Soriano batted .262 with 32 homers and 108 RBI this season.

>>MLB Regular Season Comes To Close

(Undated)  --  The 2012 regular season in Major League Baseball has come to an end.  Detroit Tigers slugger Miguel Cabrera made history on the final day as he became the first Triple Crown winner in 45 years.  Cabrera finished the regular season with an American League-leading .330 batting average, 44 home runs and 139 runs batted in.  Boston Red Sox Hall of Famer Carl Yastrzemski [[ yah-STREM-skee ]] was the last Triple Crown winner in baseball back in 1967.

Meanwhile, the Oakland Athletics and New York Yankees clinched division titles on the final day.  The A's captured the AL West crown by routing the Rangers, 12-5.  Oakland trailed Texas by 13 games on June 30th, but swept the three-game series to clinch its first division title since 2006.  The Yankees claimed their 18th AL East title in franchise history when the Orioles lost to the Rays.  New York also went on to crush Boston, 14-2.

The playoffs will get underway with the inaugural Wild Card games on Friday.  The Atlanta Braves will host the defending World Series champion St. Louis Cardinals in the NL tilt.  The winner will advance to face the Washington Nationals.  In the AL affair, the Rangers will host the Orioles.  The winner will move on to clash with the Yankees.  The Cincinnati Reds will face the San Francisco Giants in one NL Division Series.  The A's will take on the Tigers in an AL Division Series.
