Illinois Debt Hasn't Changed Since Last Year

This time last year the state was about eight billion dollars in debt and according to State Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka, the debt hasn't even budged.  That's despite a 67-percent income tax hike that was supposed to generate money to pay the bills.

The tax hike was supposed to be temporary and expire in 2014.  Topinka won't predict whether the hike is going to become permanent but she says lawmakers need to stop spending the additional cash and actually use it for what it was designed for.  Right now the state has 135-thousand-147 unpaid bills totaling five-point-nine billion dollars.
