Monticello Confident They Can Find Conference

The three schools left in the dark in the Okaw Valley shake up may have a conference after all.

Pending approval from the athletic directors of the Sangamon Valley Conference, Monticello, Tolono Unity and Maroa-Forsyth have applied to join the nine member conference of west-central Illinois. Monticello Assistant Principal and Athletic Director Randy Moss says this may be an avenue for them to acquire a conference affiliation for the school year 2014-15.

A decision is expected this week on whether Monticello will be allowed to join the Sangamon Valley Conference. Moss says if things do not go their way, he is still optimistic they can find something, and continue the Okaw Valley on. He explains because most conference require an early November notice of memberships, time is running out for Monticello to find a conference affiliation.

One of the original reasons for several schools talking of dismembering was travel costs. Moss says while that is certainly a primary concern with becoming an independent, he says that will limit the amount of games for certain programs, but won't be a reason for shutting the programs down all together.

Moss says he is confident Monticello will find a conference affiliation, however, he adds it could be the 2015-16 school year before they either join, or find other schools to join them in a new Okaw Valley Conference.

Because Monticello is a founding member of the Okaw Valley Conference, they hold the naming rights to it.
