DJWH Introduces New Pharmacy Partnership To Help Them Out

width=Starting Monday, patients at the Dr. John Warner Hospital who get their prescriptions filled in Clinton can take advantage of a new program that will help benefit the hospital.

The '340B Drug Program' allows the hospital to partner with Walgreens pharmacy to fill their prescription needs, and at the same time benefit the hospital. CEO of the DJWH, Earl Sheehy explains the hospital does not have a pharmaceutical license, nor do they want to get one, and this program allows them to partner with Walgreens to provide the 340B retail services.

Through the program, the city owned hospital will be reimbursed for the drugs for supplying them through a virtual inventory. Walgreens will get reimbursed for their filling fee. Sheehy says while patients are still allowed to fill their prescriptions through other pharmacies, they can help the hospital by going to Walgreens.

The DJWH has been a part of the 340B program already, and Sheehy says it was just a basic involvement of getting their vaccines through the program. He explains through the program, they cannot use the same program for outpatient services, it can only be used as an inpatient program, and to get into the outpatient services, they would have to have separate inventory of drugs for that.

Sheehy explains there are state and federal laws prohibiting hospitals from competing with retail pharmacies, so again they would have to have a completely separate inventory of drugs, and Sheehy adds if they had a retail pharmacy, they could get penalized and lose money. So having a retail pharmacy at the hospital is not a viable option for them.

Patients again can start taking advantage of the program Monday.
