Local Representative Questions EPAs Role In Allowing PCBs At Clinton Landfill

Call it a conspiracy theory. Call it a belief. Or call it crazy. But one local legislator believes there are a lot more factors at play in the Peoria Landfill's attempt to get a permit to allow the dumping of polychlorinated biphynals, or PCBs, into the Clinton Landfill.

Illinois legislator Chapin Rose says he is not a conspiracy theorist, but he believes there are other avenues to pursue for the purpose of dumping these PCB's. The biggest concern voiced by thousands of residents, and several agencies around the area is the Clinton Landfill sits on the Mahomet Aquifer, which is the drinking water source for three-quarters of a million people in central Illinois. Rose believes there has to be a better avenue of dumping those.

While he cannot prove this, Rose believes this is something the EPA wants to have happen. He says in the past, they are normally a headache to deal with, but when it comes to answering questions of this issue, they are nowhere to be found.

According to Rose, the US EPA issued a statement claiming the PCBs coming from the Great Lakes being dumped over the Mahomet Acquifer is not a big deal because the Mahomet Aquifer gets recharged by the Great Lakes anyways. Rose disputes that claim and sites a professor from the University of Illinois who has done extensive research and issued several articles providing factual evidence of why the EPAs claims are wrong.

It was the DeWitt County Board's decision to enter into an agreement with Peoria Disposal, the parent company of the Clinton Landfill, to dump the PCB's there. Rose believes it has been the EPAs intent to dump these PCBs from the Great Lakes into a downstate landfill, and after being turned down many times, they finally found a community will to take them. Rose believes the EPA will "move hell and high water to make sure this thing actually happen".
