Illinois Paid Workers $23 Million To Stay Home

A published report says cash-strapped Illinois has paid state workers about $23 million for administrative leave over the last five years.

The report reveals since 2007, more than 2,000 state employees who've stayed at home have continued to receive paychecks and collect benefits. That's even as the state has struggled to pay its own bills.

Workers can be placed on administrative leave for several reasons, including investigation for wrongdoing. They are not allowed to return to work. The report shows in some instances, those on leave continued to receive raises.

Gov. Pat Quinn says paid leave is carefully monitored and necessary. His office says Quinn has instructed state agency heads to take a closer look at who's on leave.
