As a result of a Task Force 6 (TF6) investigation initiated in DeWitt County, two subjects have been arrested in Clinton.  Arrested were John D. Smith, age 54, and Mary F. Smith, age 52, both of Clinton.  Both were arrested for commission of the offenses of Criminal Drug Conspiracy, a class X felony; Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance, more than 15 grams but less than 100 grams, a class X felony; Unlawful Possession of a Controlled Substance with Intent to Deliver, more than 15 grams but less than 100 grams, Class X felony; and Money Laundering, a class 3 felony.  Offenses were enhanced due to being less than 1,000 feet from a school.  Both subjects are incarcerated in the DeWitt County jail pending a bond hearing.  If convicted, a class X felony carries a possible sentence of not less than 6 years and not more than 30 years and the class 3 felony carries a possible sentence from probation up to 5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Assisting TF6 in the planning, investigation, and arrests yesterday were the Illinois Attorney General’s Office, the DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, Clinton Police Department, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Illinois State Police Zone 5, District 6, SWAT, and Crime Scene Services.

No other information will be released at this time.  TF6 is a multi-agency enforcement unit specializing in narcotics enforcement.  TF6 is composed of officers from the Clinton Police Department, DeWitt County Sheriff’s Office, McLean County Sheriff’s Office, Illinois State University Police Department, and the Illinois State Police.

The public is reminded that charges are merely accusations and criminal defendants are presumed innocent unless proven guilty.  Persons having information regarding illegal drugs are encouraged to contact the TF6 tip line at www.taskforce6.com.
