>>Grad Rates For College Football, Basketball Athletes Up

(Chicago, IL)  --  Graduation rates for major college football and men's basketball athletes have hit a new record.  NCAA figures show that for the first time, at least 70 percent of athletes in those two designations obtain a college degree.  The rates were measured for athletes who entered college in 2005 and took up to six years to graduate.  Seventy-four percent of men's basketball players earned a degree, up six points from a year go.  Major college football players managed to graduate at a rate of 70 percent, up slightly from 2011.  NCAA President Mark Emmert says he's pleased with the progress, but wants to see grad rates keep going up.

The NCAA has recently begun to crack down on universities where athletes aren't making the grade.  The UConn men's basketball team is barred from post-season play this upcoming season after only eleven percent of UConn players were found to have graduated from the class beginning in 2005.
