ISU Tells State It Needs $85-Million In Funding

width=Illinois State University is asking the state to appropriate nearly $85 million in funds for its fiscal 2014 operating budget, while acknowledging that it is unlikely to receive that much.

University trustees approved a request Friday that represents about a 17% increase in current state funding.

Illinois has been steadily decreasing money for higher education as it grapples with debt, unpaid bills and other budget woes.

Still, ISU President Al Bowman says it is "important symbolically to tell the state this is what we really need."

The university's appropriations have dropped from $92 million to $72 million since Bowman became president in 2003.

To cope, Bowman says, ISU has turned to tuition, private donations and grants, and has been helped by stable enrollment.
