Social Security Honoring Veterans By Expediting Disability Claims

As Americans take time this Veterans Day to honor those who have served our country, Social Security would like to remind veterans of a special they program they have for them if they have been hurt serving America.

Social Security's "Wounded Warrior Initiative" is geared towards veterans who have been injured in the line of duty. Jack Meyers with Social Security explains this initiative is designed to expedite the disability application process. He says the criteria are the same for veterans and anyone else, the difference being, veterans get their claims expedited.

Because getting the medical records of an individual can take quite a while, up to several weeks, to get to Social Security, Meyers explains they have partnered with the Department of Veterans Affairs to get access to a veteran's medical records quicker.

According to Meyers, many times, a wounded veteran who cannot work will not apply for disability benefits because they think it would interfere with the benefits they are receiving from the military. Meyers encourages that person to apply , and make it known in the application they are unable to work.

Expediting the claims process for veterans can significantly speed up the process. For more information on the Wounded Warriors Initiative, you can visit www.socialsecurity.gov/woundedwarriors.
