SIU Scraps Old Strategic Plans For Carbondale

Southern Illinois University has developed a scaled-back plan for the future of its Carbondale campus after closing the books on a set of more ambitious goals.

The old plan was called "Southern at 150" and included the goal of making the school 1 of top 75 public research institutes nationwide by the time the university turns 150 in 2019.

Chancellor Rita Cheng says the old plan wasn't bad but was drafted in a different era for public higher education. It was launched in 2003.

The new plan has been the result of 2 years of work by a committee. It sets goals for student success and the university's finances, among other things.

It'll likely be presented to the board of trustees early next year.
