Today Is World Diabetes Day

Today is World Diabetes Day, an effort designed to bring attention to the seventh deadliest disease in the United States.  Diabetes is a chronic disease in which a person's body doesn't produce or properly process sugar.  Left untreated, diabetes can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, and a number of life-threatening medical complications.  Dr. Michael Jakoby, associate professor at the SIU School of Medicine in Springfield, says more young people are being diagnosed with Type Two diabetes.  The good news though, is a healthy diet and moderate exercise will help control or even prevent the disease.
