DeWitt County Tax Payers Association Filing Tax Lawsuit

The DeWitt County Tax Payers Association, for the third consecutive year is protesting an alleged illegal real estate tax being levied by the DeWitt County Board.

The Association is managing a tax protest and is filing a tax protest lawsuit for all taxpayers who choose to participate. President of the Association, Bill Spencer explains their first effort was successful, and moneys from illegal tax levies were returned to the tax payers. Spencer says that sparked an interest from the tax payers, and now they have learned the County is taxing and not spending that money.

The protest of last year's levies is due in court next week. Spencer says their case looks promising because the Power Plant had a similar lawsuit and were able to settle their case.

Tax payers wishing to be a part of the tax protest are encouraged to join the cause. Spencer explains unless a landowner owns a large piece of real estate and pays a large amount of property taxes, it is normal for a person to join forces in a tax protest with a group.

Spencer feels there are several benefits to the taxpayers to be a part of this cause. He explains a successful suit could result in a lower tax rate, and it could be a result of almost $4-thousand per household.

Spencer feels the recent election, where six new board members will be seated on the County Board is the voters way of voting in more fiscally responsible Board members.

Taxpayers wishing to participate in the tax protest are asked to confirm by Saturday November 17 at 5pm. You can sign up in person at the DeWitt County Constitution building on Washington Street in Clinton. For further details, you can also call 309-830-9750.
