A proposal to legalize marijuana for medical use could come up for debate this week. State Representative Lou Lang, who is sponsoring the proposal, says this is about helping sick people have a better quality of life.

Lang says the law would be heavily regulated and people will only be allowed to purchase two ounces in a two week period.

Lang has failed to garner enough support in years past but he believes he has at least 60 votes to pass the bill and send it over to the Senate. His proposal would legalize medical marijuana for patients with debilitating conditions, such as multiple sclerosis and cancer. Patients would have to get a background check before being approved and would also have to register with the state's Department of Health. Lang wants to pass the measure on a trial basis and after three years, lawmakers would have to revisit the idea and decide whether to keep it in place.
