Top Illinois Lawmakers Back Immigrants' Licenses

Top Illinois Republicans plan to announce their support for providing driver's licenses to illegal immigrants.

House Minority Leader Tom Cross of Oswego and Senate Minority Leader Christine Radogno will join former GOP Gov. Jim Edgar at a news conference Tuesday at the state Capitol.

The plan awaiting a Senate floor vote would allow the 250,000 illegal immigrants who are already driving the chance to be tested, licensed, and buy insurance.

Uninsured immigrant motorists cause $64 million in damage claims each year.

Edgar joined Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Senate President John Cullerton two weeks ago in announcing support for Cullerton's legislation.

Cross and Radogno weren't there. Radogno blamed a scheduling conflict and a spokeswoman didn't know Cross' position at the time.
