Seven Catholic Schools Leaving Big East Conference

The seven catholic schools in the Big East have reportedly decided to leave the conference. ESPN reports DePaul, Georgetown, Marquette, Providence, St. John's, Seton Hall and Villanova are all leaving the Big East. The presidents of the seven schools are expected to issue a statement in the next 24-to-48 hours, according to the report. With the latest defections, Cincinnati, UConn and South Florida will be the only full members in the Big East. Temple will become a full member next year. Once the seven schools decide on what league to move to, they will keep their automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament. Notre Dame and Louisville may also now join Syracuse and Pitt in the ACC next season ahead of schedule, according to the report. The Irish have been negotiating an early exit.

Notre Dame basketball coach Mike Brey said the Catholic schools are also in discussion about making a national Catholic conference with Xavier, Saint Louis, Dayton, Creighton, Gonzaga and possibly Saint Mary's. In the last few years, West Virginia, Pittsburgh, TCU, Louisville, Notre Dame and Rutgers have all decided to leave the Big East. The conference added Temple and will add Houston, SMU, Memphis, UCF, Boise State and San Diego State in 2013. Tulane and East Carolina will join in 2014 and Navy in 2015.
