Salvation Army Uses Bell Ringing Efforts To Help Throughout Year

There are many ways to get involed and help others during the holiday season, and the Salvation Army is one of them.

As you continue to finish up that last minute Christmas shopping, you will probably notice the Salvation Army Bell Ringers out. The money raised in DeWitt County through these efforts stays in the County, and is recycled back to those in need throughout the year. Ernie Harvey, with the Salvation Army, explains these are one-time gifts and the money helps those in need in terms of bills, food and prescriptions among other areas.

The primary fundraiser of the year is the bell-ringing at Christmas time at various locations throught the County. The more money given to bell-ringers, the more help can be given throughout the entire year. Harvey explains though, once the money runs out, they are not able to help any more families. He says they have had to turn people down because of lack of funds later in the year. Yet, he says the money raised can go a long way.

The Salvation Army is a very personal, charitable organization, according to Harvey. They try to help individuals on a case-by-case basis. Harvey says they keep the check amounts to $40 in order to help as many as possible.
