Arrest Warrants Issued For NIU Fraternity Members

DeKalb police and prosecutors have filed hazing-related charges against nearly two dozen members of a Northern Illinois University fraternity.

Arrest warrants were issued Monday for 22 members of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. The warrants were filed after the death of 19-year-old freshman David Bogenberger, who was found unresponsive at the fraternity house in November. Five fraternity members are charged with felony hazing and 17 members are wanted for misdemeanor alcohol charges.

NIU said the fraternity hosted an unsanctioned event and has received a temporary sanction removing them as a recognized student organization.

The DeKalb County coroner ruled Bogenberger's death an accident. He said the student's blood alcohol level was about five times the legal limit and triggered arrhythmia.

The fraternity did not return phone and e-mail messages seeking comment.
