CT Tragedy Brings Awareness, Preparation To Forefront of One Local School

Schools administrators across the country are revisiting their readiness strategies should a person armed with a weapon enter their school.

Most school districts regularly discuss and adjust their plan in place, and Blue Ridge Schools are no exception. Superintendent of Blue Ridge Schools, Susan Wilson says they regularly revisit their plan. They spend time as a school district reviewing, but according to Wilson, they also meet with local law enforcement agencies regularly and review any new information not just in school shootings, but other emergency situations.

It may start to become more common practice for schools to practice putting their plans into action through mock drills. Wilson says Blue Ridge schools did that over the summer not only for their staff, but to familiarize local law enforcement of their facilities.

With these recent events taking place, school administrators, lawmakers, and parents may begin calling for more security in the schools. From a Superintendent's standpoint, Wilson says she could see more discussion begin and feels many of the points made have a lot of validation.

Wilson mentioned DeWitt County Sheriff Jered Shofner's involvement in bringing DeWitt County school administrators and law enforcement together to continue updating plans in place. The Sheriff has been very active to find out what can be learned and done differently during these events.
