Rare golden eagle rehabbing broken wing in Decatur

The Illinois Raptor Center in Decatur has been caring for a rare golden eagle found with a broken wing.

The bird was found in a field north of Sadorus in Champaign County on Oct. 25. Now named Midas, the 8-pound bird has been with the raptor center since Dec. 6.

Raptor center program director Jacques Nuzzo says the center has never had a golden eagle and caring for the bird has presented challenges. Golden eagles eat a lot of food and instead of diving for their prey they slam into them. Nuzzo is rehabbing the bird's wing by forcing him to fly to food on a perch.

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says about 50 golden eagles spend the winter in northwestern Illinois.
