It's a no go on a proposal to ban assault weapons.  State senators weren't able to rally enough support behind the bill, which would have prohibited people in Illinois from owning military style assault weapons and high capacity magazines.  Those who already own the items would have been allowed to keep them.  But, they would've had to pay a fee and register the items with the Illinois State Police.  The ISP supports the proposal but Todd Vandermyde, with the National Rifle Association, was adamantly against the idea.  He says it punishes law abiding gun owners and invades their privacy.  On top of that, Vandermyde says anyone could request the information and find out whose homes are protected, and whose are not.  A spokesperson for Senate President John Cullerton says they're not giving up on the ban.  They just need more time to get bi-partisan support.
