Ice Fishing Requires Great Attention To Safety

With the bitter cold temperatures, fishing enthusiasts brave enough to weather the cold may be attempting ice fishing this year.

Finding a good spot could be a challenge, and should a fisherman find a good spot, the Department of Natural Resources hopes they will fish safely. DNR Conservation Police Officer Ray Wichus says so far this year, the winter weather is accommodating those who enjoy ice fishing. He says the only thing stopping them right now is if the ice is thick enough to be ice fishing.

With plenty of bodies of water to ice fish on, Wichus says each year, the cold will bring out plenty of fisherman. He explains not being careful can end very badly should some out ice fishing penetrate the ice. He explains getting rescue personnel and equipment is not easy, leaving the person in the water very much in danger.

Wichus feels it may still be somewhat early for ice fishing season to really be in full swing. Especially at Clinton Lake, ice fishing at any point in the winter may be tough because of the warm water flow created by the Power Plant. He says smaller ponds though may be suitable right now for ice fishing.

Those who are preparing to ice fish should have warm clothes on hand that will help you survive if you should fall through the ice. Wichus says 'mustang suites' will help keep you alive in ice water should something happen. He adds having a cell phone near is very important and letting someone know where you are at.
